How to type 'Umlauts' on Windows 10

Umlauts

To type German umlauts on a US keybord I used the following method:

• Set the keyboard to "DEU German / United States-International layout"
• Type (hold the ALT key)
  ALT+q for ä
  ALT+p for ö
  ALT+y for ü

This method suddenly stopped to work. There is an alternative:

• Set the keyboard again to "DEU German / United States-International"
• Type and release " and follow it by a character
  "a for ä
  "o for ö
  "u for ü
